The Geographical Location of Ukraine

Ukraine is a sovereign state with its own territory, its bodies of state power and government, national em­blem, state flag and anthem.

The country is situated in the south-eastern part of Central Europe. It borders on the Russian Federation, Byelorus, Moldova, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Ukraine is one of the largest European countries. It covers the area of 604,000 square kilometers. The population of Ukraine is over 48 million people. There are people of different nation­alities in it: Ukrainians, Russians, Jews, Byelorussians, Moldavians, Poles and others.

Ukraine is considered a land of re­markable beauty. Most part of Ukraineis flat and mountains make up only 5% of its territory. The Dniepro is the main river in the country. It is one of the longest rivers in the world. Besides the Dniepro there are the Dniester, the Bug, the Donets, which provide Ukraine with water. Ukraine is washed by the Black Sea and the sea of Azov and has such im­portant ports as Odesa, Mariupol, Mykolayiv, Kerch, Kherson.

Like any other country Ukra­ine has big cities, among them are Kiyiv, the capital of Ukra­ine, Kharkiv, which used to be the capital of Ukrainian Soviet Republic and now it is an important industrial and cultural centre, Donetsk is a coal­mining and chemical centre, Odesa is a big sea port, Lviv is a large scien­tific and cultural centre and a lot of others.

From the point of view of its natu­ral resources Ukraine is a rich coun­try. It is rich in coal, oil, lead, iron ore and building materials. So Ukraine is an industrial and agricultural country.
